Abstract

There is a growing demand for Research Data Management (RDM) services. The RDM and related FAIR principles represent a complex and multifaceted field that requires a diverse range of expertise. While the demand is increasing, research-related organizations struggle to find enough resources allocated to support services. In Finland, RDM specialists have formed a national training community to address some of the challenges by creating educational materials, training one another, and providing peer support. Here, we describe the structure of the network, how it functions, its relationship with international RDM networks, what can be achieved through national cooperation, and the current challenges.

Author Biographies

  • Tanja Lindholm, University of Helsinki

    Tanja Lindholm works as a research data management expert at the University of Helsinki’s research stations, where she is responsible for developing their research data management practices. Her work focuses on mapping metadata from long-term monitoring studies and creating data management plans for the University of Helsinki research stations. With a background in geology and biology, she has previously worked at Aalto University, University of Helsinki, and in data support at the University of Helsinki Library. Lindholm is an active trainer and science communicator who promotes FAIR data principles in both national and international research infrastructures, including the eLTER network.

  • Pauli Assinen, University of Helsinki

    Pauli Assinen works at the Helsinki University Library, where he coordinates the Library’s project and enterprise architecture operations. At the national and international levels, he has served as the chair and member of the open science working groups as well as the coordinator of EU-funded OpenAIRE-projects at the University of Helsinki. He has been OpenAIRE NOAD since 2015, and for two years, he has been a member of the Executive board of the OpenAIRE AMKE in the role of treasurer.

  • Päivi Malinen, Tampere University

    Päivi Malinen is an Information Specialist at Tampere University Library, with a particular focus on research data services. Her responsibilities include providing support and training for researchers, teachers, and students on matters related to research data management, data protection, and the responsible conduct of research.

  • Laura Mure, Aalto University

    Laura Mure works as an Information Specialist at Aalto University Research Services, where she serves as an administrator of the university’s current research information system (CRIS). In this role, her daily tasks include ensuring the system runs smoothly, supporting researchers in using it and contributing to its further development. She also supports the research community in areas of open science, such as open access publishing and research data management. In addition, Laura contributes by reviewing data management plans and participating in the university’s RDM training activities.
